Cathy Lee is a Registered Nurse and the Senior OHS Advisor for Lutheran Community Care and has more than 25 years’ experience across a wide range of industries in occupational health, safety and injury management. Cathy sees her role as critical to ensuring management systems are in place to both prevent injury and manage these effectively when they occur, enabling the community care workforce to continue to provide their valuable services to the most vulnerable.

Getting the right staff has never been more important in the aged care sector. Reputational and OHS risk from unsafe employees cannot be ignored. Lutheran Community Care with the assistance and oversight of Dr Rob McCartney (Occupational Physician) have implemented a suite of efficient and effective strategies to build a sustainable workforce with the right attributes and skills to work at the human interface. One of the solutions was the development of an innovative pre-employment risk assessment tool that provides evidence-based information in a timely and efficient manner enabling prompt decisions. Accurate real-time data enable better informed strategic workforce planning. Preliminary revealed that 15% of applicants as higher risk which raises questions about the existing workforce and risks around fitness for duty? These among other relevant matters will be discussed to demonstrate the importance of sound risk management tools in recruitment.
