Abstract:

Workplace culture is largely determined by its leaders. Leadership Development for most organisations within the Aged Care industry is valued and implemented on a yearly basis for emerging as well as existing leaders. Whilst there are many leadership skills transferable across all industries there are some specifics that ‘off the shelf’ and classroom-based programs just won’t cover. Especially in these unprecedented times, leaders need to be able to create workplace cultures that are resilient enough to deal with current and future challenges effectively.
To have a meaningful impact on workplace culture, leadership development needs to extend beyond the classroom. It needs to focus on building leadership capacity specific to the Aged Care sector and engage the workforce in the process of developing their own leaders using empirical assessment tools and evidence-based practice.

Deva North, General Manager of People Services at Brightwater Care Group in Western Australia will share how they have adapted their leadership program over the past 15 years to create a program that engages leaders and their workforce, outside the classroom, to apply models and techniques that align with the Aged Care Leadership Capability Framework and Quality Standards. In partnership with Data Drives Insight and Veraison, experts in leadership and culture transformation, Brightwater Care Group have created a highly effective, industry specific program – the Bright Leaders Program.

The Bright Leaders Program involves the use of two empirical 360-degree inventories that specifically measure leadership capability in the Aged Care sector. The group and individual development areas are then identified based on the results of these inventories, with the whole program designed to target these areas. Outside of the formal ‘classroom’ sessions, leaders are tasked with engaging the workforce to lead cross-functional working groups targeted at transforming some of the most significant workforce challenges e.g. workforce planning and retention of staff. This gives the leaders an opportunity to apply the learning from the program, while actually leading a significant shift in workforce effectiveness and culture.

In partnership with the program facilitators, Deva will share the results of the program on both leadership capability, retention, organisational culture and workforce effectiveness including the independently assessed ROI of 470%.

Biography:

Deva joined Brightwater as Employee Relations Advisor in 2014. Since that time Deva has risen up the ranks from Employee Relations Consultant in 2015, to Manager HR Operations in 2017, and in June 2019 Deva became General Manager of People Services.
She has a wealth of experience in employee relations and held various human resources roles at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry prior to joining Brightwater.
Deva graduated from the University of Western Australia with a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Politics and Industrial Relations, and is currently undertaking the Signature Leadership Program with Leadership WA.
