Topic: Sparking excitement and curiosity through continued social learning of technology for home care clients

To respond to the increased demand from their clients for a more connected home care experience, VMCH has adapted their business to use technology to provide new services to clients in their own home.

VMCH are not alone in this challenge as seniors become more savvy buyers of the services that impact their lives and the role technology plays. The future requires more accessible solutions to people at home and digital engagement with customers is now a key part of the strategy.

While undertaking the essential in-home services such as personal care, cleaning, and shopping, it is important to still build relationships with clients, recognising the role human contact has as the key for reduced isolation and improved psychological health. One key initiative is VMCH’s ‘Technology at Home’ program, a partnership with YourLink – an organisation focussed on the digital inclusion of Seniors.

‘Technology at Home’ has rolled out to 100+ CHSP participants across Victoria. The service provides individuals with a device (tablet or iPad), data and essential training on aspects of the technology, catered towards the participant’s skill level. All this occurs through a fun, inclusive and relaxed experience that helps to overcome fear and spark curiosity.

For some Community Support Workers, their roles have significantly changed due to COVID-19. They have had to quickly pivot to an online environment while still providing home care services. VMCH has had to consider the design of work practices for the future. They have provided training and support for redeployed staff to assist in the online establishment and engagement of CHSP clients in partnership with YourLink.

Feeling involved is vital for a person’s wellbeing. Keeping in touch and connected with family members and friends is so important. This program, coupled with the device, is allowing them to keep in contact and feel a part of something. Learning new skills keeps the mind stimulated and active, giving people a sense of purpose and achievement during their day.

The engagement from both staff and clients’ families has been extremely positive. There has been a great sense of collaboration and clients are thrilled when they use it for the first time.

Co-presented by VMCH and YourLink, we will step through the shift in strategic direction and the ‘Technology at Home’ program. We will give insight to how it has been achieved through funding, and how it has been received by clients and Community Support Workers.
